An individual considering mental health treatment often feels more apprehensive, embarrassed and vulnerable compared to a person seeking treatment for other medical conditions. A thorough diagnostic assessment followed by treatment considerations should be completed in a sensitive and empathetic manner with the clinician, who serves as a consultant and directs treatment to allow the patient achieve identified goals and aspirations. The Fawver Wellness Clinic treats "mental health" conditions as "medical" conditions, addressing and monitoring "whole body" consequences of conditions such as mood and anxiety disorders. As the name of the clinic implies, our focus of treatment is on achieving "wellness" and striving toward individual capabilities rather than progressing toward disability.
Fortunately, a greater understanding of the neurobiology of psychiatric conditions is emerging. Psychiatric disturbances such as depression and anxiety disorders are caused by a variable combination of factors such as:
Due to these factors, certain symptoms of psychiatric illnesses may emerge. Similar to diagnostic assessments in other areas of medicine, specific clusters of psychiatric symptoms lead to a diagnosis, which directs the treatment approach.
Psychiatric treatment most frequently includes the use of medical assessment and medication considerations to correct biological disturbances of the brain and their associated impacts on the body
Psychotherapy, (talk therapy), is most commonly provided by non-medical clinicians, such as psychologists, social workers, and masters-level therapists.
Left untreated, significant psychiatric illness may cause prominent physical impairments in specific areas in the brain and the entire body. For Example:
Chronic untreated depression may lead to shrinkage of a specific area of the brain responsible for memory recall and stress tolerance.
Bipolar disorder may lead to a 40% reduction in an area of the brain responsible for the emotional, hormonal and autonomic responses to socially relevant cues.
Chronic mood disturbances may contribute to "whole body" inflammation, contributing to increasing the risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart conditions and stroke.
With these consequences in mind, psychiatric illness should be treated as a "whole body illness" requiring prompt and effective treatment in a similar manner as other medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer.
Based upon the degree of impairment caused by the psychiatric disturbance, medications may be recommended to treat the chemical changes that occur with mental health conditions.
At the Fawver Wellness Clinic, individuals are assessed for psychiatric and specific other medical conditions. Treatment options are reviewed based upon the diagnostic evaluation, past treatment responses, patient preferences, and family member treatment responses for similar conditions.
