SciaticaSciatica is a term used to describe symptoms such as pain that radiates from
the back down the leg. It is also a term used to describe irritation and/or compression of one of five nerves that make up the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body; it runs from the spinal cord to your buttock, down the hips, and down the backs of both legs. Sciatica is a term that is often misunderstood.
L.F. is a 46 year old female who came to our office with a chief complaint of pain in the low back area as well as pain going down both legs. The pain in her right leg went all the way to the toes and foot while the pain she had in the left leg stopped at the calf. She had already undergone two lumbar fusions and several epidural injections, all with temporary pain relief. She was having difficulty sleeping, walking, exercising, and riding in a car. After other pain relief methods were tried we decided to try the spinal cord stimulator. The patient underwent the trial which was in place for 7 days. During that time the patient stated she had 90% relief of the pain in her legs and 30-40% relief of the pain in her low back. We then went through with the permanent implantation of the spinal cord stimulator. At her follow up visit from this procedure she stated, “It is wonderful, I am able to sleep better and the pain in my legs is almost completely gone. It stops the pain in my legs, hips, and feet. I can sleep for longer periods of time. I can also drive and ride in a car which I could not do before having the spinal cord stimulator implanted.”
