There’s several things you can do to save energy this winter…Here’s a few tips
1. Check the caulking around windows and doors, if it doesnt look like a good seal, it might be time to re-caulk. We recommend using 50 year caulk over the 35. The 35 seems to be more watery, and shrinks as it dries. Cutting out old caulking may be needed as well.
2. Insulation? If you have an attic, check to see that the insulation over the living areas have enough to make it to the top of the ceiling joists. If it doesn’t, you may want to think of calling in a contractor.
3. If you have a brick home, check the mortar lines to see if there’s cracks or missing mortar. Tuck pointing may be needed. Also cable company’s have drilled holes around the house for cable access, If you have switched to satellite or AT&T U Verse, those holes may need to be filled.
4. Basement windows and crawlspace access are two places we see energy lost. The access door, if outside should be insulated. Windows should be caulked or glazed. Check the glazing on older homes to make sure its a good seal.
5. Turn your thermostat down!!! It saves money and energy to run the heat less. Wear a sweater and if you can take it, run the temp around 65-70 degrees, it will save money! Programmable thermostats are helpful as well.
