Karen Ann Leshk was a lovely 17 year old girl approaching her 18th birthday when she committed suicide. What caused her decision to end her life is unknown. And yes, Karen's life counted for something because people cared. Out of the sadness of her life ending rose an idea that other lives could be saved if they had someone with whom to talk. Today, the Crisis Center is a memorial to Karen and the dedicated lives that created the Crisis Center's multiple services
Volunteering: A Family Affair
-by Gavin Mariano, Youth As Resources Program Coordiantor
When I was first tapped to coordinate the Crisis Center's youth development program called, "Youth As Resources" or "YAR" as it's sometimes referred to, I didn't know anything about the volunteers who were already involved in the group, other than seeing a list of their names.
However, during my first official meeting at the public library in Griffth, I met a special family of volunteers, the Cooks. Linda and Rich Cook, along with their son and daughter Jeff and Veronica were truly all in it together. As a group--a family--they volunteered throughout their community and schools. All together, they easily racked up hundreds of hours of service for every season. After Jeff and Veronica grew up and both went into military service, they could no longer attend YAR meetings, but Rich and Linda virtually never missed a meeting. In fact, till this day, they remain my most two committed volunteers and two of the biggest Crisis Center fans.
