If there is one thing guaranteed to reduce quality of life it is chronic back pain. It can immobilise the sufferer completely, make every movement an ordeal and become the dominant factor in life, against which all other plans become secondary. One of the worst aspects of back pain is that there are so many different causes to it that sufferers can very often feel that the doctors simply are not sufficiently competent to treat it, but there is a limit to the number of painkillers that can be swallowed without causing severe potential health problems and at the other extreme surgery so close to the spinal cord can be a very dangerous procedure indeed. Happily though there are some things that you can do yourself, either on your own, under qualified supervision or as part of an exercise group which can often relieve your pain and help you get back on your feet again.
There is a theory that much back pain is caused by muscular imbalance, the results of which are that the muscles pull parts of the back in different directions thus causing stresses and consequent pain. Gentle exercise can strengthen these muscles and teach them how to hold your skeleton together properly, thus relieving abnormal tensions.
There is a theory also that vitamin deficiency can cause back pains, and if your body is lacking in vitamins this can cause inflammation in the joints of the back and subsequent pain. Taking sensible doses of multivitamins may prevent these deficiencies and, by relieving the inflammation, reduce the pain level.
Swimming is an excellent exercise for easing muscular pain in the back, since it stretches the back and since you are in the water which is supporting your body your skeleton is relieved of the stresses which are caused by attempting to stand whilst your back is painful. If you have access to a swimming pool regular exercise in it should prove very beneficial.
Heating pads or hot water bottles can relieve muscular pains not only in the back but elsewhere too and they work by relaxing and expanding your muscles. This is good therapy to apply before exercising and helps to prevent excessive movement from causing further damage. The joy of heat of course is that unlike drug treatments there are no side-effects and provided that you keep to sensible temperatures there is no way in which it can harm you.
We are all used to bending over forwards but sometimes bending backwards can stretch the spine sufficiently to relieve pain. This can sometimes be accomplished by using a device called an inversion table which is slightly concave, and which you lie on face down, stretching your feet up into the air.

The important thing to remember is that without going to the extreme of taking strong drugs or putting yourself under the surgeon's knife your pain can be relieved by using very simple methods.
