Many Americans dream of owning a home. Privacy, security and the ability to customize their living space are some of the reasons people want their own home. Some people want to own a home because they’re tired of paying rent, and they consider a home an investment that might appreciate in value.
In some markets, homes built from the ground up are expensive and, therefore, out of reach for some people. Modern prefab homes are a less costly alternative to the traditionally built home.
By definition, a prefabricated modular home is one constructed using factory-made modules. Once delivered to the homeowner’s land by flatbed truck, the modules are assembled into the final product. Stick-built homes take weeks or months to construct, while many modular homes can be assembled in about one week.
Just as with new, traditionally built homes, prefabricated homes can be customized. As for floor plans, choices may include multi-level, ranch style, Cape Cod, duplex or another style. Home buyers have choices in selecting room lighting as well as the fixtures for the bathroom and kitchen.
Doors, exterior trim, shingles, siding and windows can be selected to suit the buyer's tastes. People may choose either gas or electric heat for their HVAC system. (Prefabricated homes are energy efficient too!) As for flooring, choices include carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles.
Beyond choices in style and decor, modern prefab homes allow people’s dreams about the uses for their living areas to come true. The woman who wants a home office for her start-up can have it. Adults can have the convenience of a master bathroom for themselves and another one for their children. Families may request a family room.
Buyers can rest assured that in getting the modular prefab home they want, they aren’t sacrificing their safety or the safety of their families. Beginning in 1976, the Department of Housing and Urban Development began setting standards for manufactured and prefabricated homes. These homes must meet standards for energy efficiency, quality, structural integrity and resistance to fire. Some local governments also have codes governing prefabricated homes.
No one who’s considering buying a prefabricated home rather than one that’s built from the ground up should feel shortchanged. These homes have all the elements for comfortable living.
If you’ve dreamed about building your own custom home for you and your family, modular construction is the way to go. It’s a better construction style that offers customization that stays within your budget.
