Congratulations on your decision! Building your own home is thrilling. But it’s also a big task, with a lot of decisions you need to make, almost all of which directly affect your budget.
To make sure you get exactly what you need in your brand new, never-been-lived-in-home, there are several things to consider to make certain your space is perfect for you.
Floor Plans
Searching for that perfect floor plan for your new space? Consider modular! You can get a high-quality home built with modular construction on a solid floor plan that’s customizable from top to bottom.
When it come to your floor plan, consider the following:
1) Size.
Where are you in life? Is this your first home? Are you hoping to raise a family in this space, or is this your down-sized house to enjoy as you prepare for your own retirement? How many rooms do you need, and how big do they need to be?
2) Floors.
How many people will live in this new home? If retirement is close, multiple flights of stairs may not be a great fit. Do you have adult children living nearby, or do you plan to invite your parents to stay for a visit? Depending on your age, mobility and physical limitations, a main floor bedroom and bath might be the best option.
Go For Consistency
When selecting the features of your house, including doors, windows, and trim finish, going with a classic makes the rest of your selections much easier. For example, a Cape Cod cottage can be constructed with any number of siding colors, but it will always look sharp with a crisp white door (with matching cabinets inside) and some adorable shutters.
If your building site includes deciduous trees, siding with a natural or cream tone will make your house look as though it belongs. While some colors can get a bit overdone, the right tan, natural or ivory in your landscape can be breathtaking. Work with your builder to get a color that relaxes you as you drive up, and once your car is in the garage, you are HOME!
Interior Features
While each of us must choose the finishes that bring us joy, consider focusing on consistency. Cabinet selections can be carried from kitchen to laundry room to bath for a cohesive, expansive feel. Similarly, a true wall to wall flooring and trim selection will give your home great flow. Classic features including columns and arches can provide obvious breaks from dining area to living room without damaging your open, spacious feel.
Infuse Yourself
Design this home with love! Put your personal hopes and dreams into it. If you've been waiting for years for a fireplace, invest in one. Then, consider adding architectural accents that will draw your guests in so they can relax beside the fire with you. Everybody has their heart's desire. Build yours!
